What is the use of diodes in bidirectional motors?

Hardware design

I designed a two-way motor circuit, my circuit knowledge is relatively lacking, so I found a lot of example circuits to make it.

The actual circuit can be used, but some parts are not very clear.

First of all, let me talk about my question: I don’t know what the diodes in the circuit are for. I know they can generally be used to convert AC to DC, but the current in my circuit should be bidirectional, so I don’t know what they have. What does it do. I also drew a circuit without diodes, but the circuit does not work properly.

The third picture is the pin of L298, I only used the B terminal.

You always seem to be reverse biased.

It should be used to offset voltage spikes.

This is used to eliminate voltage spikes that occur when the motor is suddenly turned off. Because the current passing through the inductor cannot be changed instantaneously, if you want to turn off the motor instantaneously, the windings of the motor will still retain current for a short time, which may burn the transistor.
